Broncos in Shaunavon Tonight

The Swift Current Broncos play the PA Raiders tonight in Shaunavon in a WHL pre-season game. This is the second WHL pre-season game in Shaunavon's brand new rink, The Crescent Point Wickenheiser Centre.

Bronco news this week has been dominated by Norwegian goalie Steffan Soberg and his no-show at Bronco camp. The events are chronicled VERY well here.

Let's Get Back to The Rink

Tonight the Swift Current Broncos play an exhibition game against the Saskatoon Blades. It is the first signifigant exhibition game of the season. Players that excel tonight could move on to successful WHL careers. Players that don't leave it all on the ice could be getting their last taste of major junior hockey.

We know this has been a bad summer for hockey. Boogaard, Belak, Rypien, Demitra, McCrimmon, Lokomotiv. Household names for reasons that are tough to reconcile. Sid Crosby, hockey's poster boy himself put on a brave and smiley face to deliver news no one was happy to hear. Hockey's best draw remains on the sidelines.

Locally, the summer hasn't been spectacular either. The Broncos are coming off their most disappointing season in franchise history. Yes it was. Poor season ticket sales for the upcoming campaign have created worries at the i-Plex. 1200 season tickets. That's it. 1200 is a decent crowd for the Redneck Betties Roller Derby team, but for a WHL team to only get that kind of support for it's 36 home games...unacceptable.

Let's get back to the rink. It's what we do. The rink is where we watch hockey. It's where we eat rink burgers and fries with vinegar. It's where we catch up with friends and make new ones. It's where first dates happen and where many senior citizens have their last social outing. The rink is our past. It's our field of dreams. Does the kid who is attending his first game...watching Charlie Horse and eating a hot dog care about the Board of Directors? Does that kid care that our 1992 born forwards are underachieving?

The rink is more than what's happening on the ice. The sport of hockey is hurting. So what. If the hockey is good, that's just a bonus. It's the experience of the rink that matters. This is a small city. Buying a beer and telling stories at the intermission is just as fun as watching big plays and huge saves.

The days are getting shorter. There is a chill in the air. Snow will soon fall. Here's to another winter of warming ourselves by gathering around a sheet of ice.

Saskatchewan's Most jacked man, Trevor Koot

As I type this, local He-man Trevor Koot is doing a final few bicep curls before flying to Cleveland for the IFBB North American Championships.

(shameless plug ahead) The Alphavoice studios are happy to have provided Trev with the production elements for his posing routine. Trev recently captured 1st place up at the Saskatchewan novice show and then at provincials a couple weeks later.

I'll keep you posted on how Saskatchewan's most musclebound real estate expert does on the North American stage. Koot heads to Cleveland Labour Day weekend.

Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer and myself...in happier times?

Whenever I introduce Swift Current mayor Jerrod Schafer at functions and fundraisers, there is always a comedic shot at him as part of the introduction. There's plenty of people without a sense of humour who think I use my MC gigs as a platform to attack the mayor.

I voted for him in the last election, and will probably vote for him again. I would miss the comedic fodder if he wasn't in the mayor chair.

Speaking of civic politics...I'm no expert on urban planning...but why on Earth would you want to build a giant recreational facility with two schools on the extreme outskirts of town? Isn't it important to build these things near your downtown?

I'm sure everyone in attendance got their picture taken with Joe Sakic during his Bronco Hall of Fame induction. I somehow came into possession of his game worn Bronco jersey years ago (long story). It was nice to get it signed and get that pic taken.

Joe is a very nice and classy fellow. He signed everything that everyone put in front of him that night. Even numerous 8 x 10's and jerseys that were fresh out of the plastic package were autographed by Sakic. Some memorabilia sellers made a small fortune off Joe that night. Lots of young hockey fans also got memories and pics with Joe that will bring smiles for a lifetime.

My two favorite NHL players have always been Joe Sakic and Theo Fleury. It was a pleasure to work with both of them this summer. Breakfast with Theo, two months later supper with Joe. Whenever I feel bad about my radio pay cheque, I think of all the perks over the years.

What's that saying? "What would the boy you were think of the man you are?" I got to rub elbows with Sakic and Fleury as an adult... that would be really cool to a kid growing up in Swift Current in 1988.

Sorry for that PAINFULLY self serving last couple paragraphs.

If you missed out on the chance to visit the Clearwater Drive In this summer, make an effort to go there next year. Good recent movies and, quite possibly, the world's best theatre popcorn. Harry Potter 7 part 2 with the kids tonight.

Swift Current Indians Wrap Up

Every August I find myself at my laptop preparing a new blog entry about the WMBL and Swift Current Indians Baseball.

Last year after a tribe win, I made light of the WMBL trophy being nowhere to be found. Lost in a broom closet in Okotoks somewhere after a Dawg 3-peat in years prior.

Two years ago was my "Co-Champs = no champs" post, where I touched on the greed of certain parties in the league stretching league resources thin to make a profit.

This year, I have been encouraged to share thoughts on the league's new player eligibility rules and the bizarre playoff seeding that saw Swift Current lose in round 1. They were seeded against one of the top teams in the league in a series that saw The Tribe without home field advantage.

Well...

I like the new eligibility rules.

"Members of the Canada-based Western Major Baseball League have voted to raise their game in the competitive world of summer collegiate baseball by adopting roster rules more in line with the premier leagues in the states. While not quite as strict, beginning in 2012, WMBL team rosters will be limited to players who have remaining college eligibility, college seniors who just completed their fourth and final college season, and a maximum of three Canadian players who are one year removed from college."

Long story short, players will not be able to play in the league into their 30's anymore. Yes, this removes Conrad Funk and past legends like Kelly Horaska from the equation...but honestly, Conrad has a baby on the way and probably wasn't going to play next year anyway. Conrad and Horse aren't the norm. We don't see those types every year.

Joe Carnahan will adjust his recruiting accordingly, and the Swift Current Indians will be fine. These new recruiting rules will give the league better credibility and attract better players to the prairies every summer.

The cost of importing players will go up. Hopefully the upgrades in skill will help fill seats around the league.

...and the playoff format? The Swift Current Indians have won three championships with that format. I agree they got screwed this year, but I'm not gonna call the league "bush league" and demand change. I'm sure things will be reviewed.

What people need to realize is the quality of baseball is going up every year. Since I've started calling games, there has been a steady rise in the talent level of the players. This year I enjoyed a few games with 2006 Indians alumni John deVisser. He marveled at how much the league has improved in just five years.

The WMBL is growing, and there will be growing pains...but if you love baseball and spend a good chunk of your summer nights at the nearest WMBL ballpark...you won't be disappointed.

Tuesday Brain Dump

A couple random meandering thoughts...

I always thought teachers didn't care about money.

As I blog this The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation and the Provincial Government are embroiled in a conflict over $$$.

My mom was an STF councillor back in the day. I grew up around teachers. If there is any job in the world that deserves better pay, it's being a teacher.

...but the STF is not winning the PR war. Opinions on teachers are dropping faster than my average in grade 11. I don't like it, but I have yet to talk to anyone, who isn't a teacher, who thinks they're doing the right thing with their job action.

I do hope this ends with teachers getting some sort of a raise. Mom was the first teacher at Irwin School every morning and the last one to leave...usually around 5pm. I've never seen Disneyworld.

Swift Current has been good to me. I've been able to MC events featuring some amazing speakers. Dennis Hull, Walter Gretzky, Sam Richardson, Jason Clermont, Chris Szarka, Danny Barret, Gord Miller and Pierre McGuire and Scott Schultz come to mind.

If you ask me which one I felt was the best...Theo Fleury now goes to the top of the list. Dennis Hull is the best speaker of the bunch, but Theo Fleury has the best speech.

...and I liked Pierre McGuire and Gord Miller's presentation. They were in town a few years ago for a Midget AAA Legionnaires fundraiser. There is no sports announcer in Canada that gets haterized on the internet more than Pierre McGuire. He's a good guy...and I'm sure he loves the attention. Good, bad or otherwise.

By the time you read this, it is likely that an announcement has been made that The Atlanta Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. I'm sure a team based out of Winnipeg will have HUGE fan support in Manitoba...but calling the team anything other than 'The Winnipeg Jets' seems like an early fail. Some think the team should have "Manitoba" in the name to capture province wide marketing magic similar to The Saskatchewan Roughriders. That doesn't have to happen in Manitoba. I lived in Brandon for two years. Winnipeg is far and away the biggest center in Manitoba. People resepct Winnipeg. Manitoba doesn't have the Dog River/Wollerton type rivalries that the 306 has. Winnipeg Jets...make it happen.

Congrats to local tattooed jacked man Trevor Koot for capturing the Provincial Bodybuilding title in Lloydminster last weekend. A lot of hard work, chicken breast and tuna went into that physique.

RIP Macho Man

I used to love wrestling. Randy "Macho Man" Savage was a big reason for that. Randy Savage was the perfect wrestler. He could do it all. He was a GREAT athlete. His matches were memorable and exciting. His top rope elbow was just one of the daredevil moves he used on a regular basis that were ahead of their time. When wrestlers were jacked up bodybuilders pretending to punch and kick each other, Randy Savage took it to the next level.

Outside the ring his interviews were legendary. Back before "If you smell what the Rock is cooking" and "That's the bottom line 'cause Stone Cold said so", Savage had kids everywhere saying "OOOOOH Yeah" and "Dig it!" in raspy voices.

...and who else had the range to be both a conniving villian and white hat wearing hero the way Savage did? If he wasn't using sneak attacks to injure "the good guys" or hiding behind Miss Elizabeth, he was Hulk Hogan's courageous wingman.

We could always overlook the bad things Randy Savage did, because we wanted to love him.

So often in life, we look for reasons to dislike people. We point out faults and quietly celebrate other's shortcomings and mistakes. We always rooted for the Macho Man...even if we weren't supposed to.

This is my favorite Macho Moment. This was a Career vs. Career match from Wrestlemania 7. The Ultimate Warrior vs. Savage. The loser was forced to "retire". Randy Savage began the match as the "bad guy". Up until this point in the match, the story was that the Warrior had thrown everything he had at Savage, but couldn't successfully put him away...

End of the World?

There is a man in California claming that world will end tonight (Friday) at midnight. I'm not sure if that is Mountain or Pacific time.

Most people are writing this man's prophecy off. Saying he is a "religious quack".

I'm one of those people. But let's pretend for a second he's right. What if this is our last day?

This is my blog. In case the apocalypse is here...

-To my friends that have moved away. I wish I would've come to visit you more often than I did. You're truly not that far away. If we survive tomorrow, expect company.

-To the people I see everyday at work...Thanks for the ways you have cheered me up. I hope I've done the same for you. Teasing me, showing me the latest viral video, going for subs at Subway, laughing at my unfunny jokes, telling me your personal stories and letting me share mine with you made each day great. Thank you.

-To people I'm not on speaking terms with. I spent part of each day wishing our situation was different. I could've been more understanding. I know you don't understand some of the choices I've made. Some I honestly regret. Our falling out has made me cherish the relationships I still have...so it has made me a better person. I hope, if we make it through tomorrow, things can be like they were.

-To my friends. Everytime my blackberry lit up with a message from you, part of me smiled. We had some great talks, got each other through some tough times, made some memories that are best kept secret (good thing the world is ending before some of those stories came to light). I loved it when we were together, spoke fondly of you to everyone and only gave you shit because I cared about you.

-To my critics and anonymous bashers. Thank you. You may not have ever given your name, but you were honest and provided me with counter points when I needed them. You helped me see the big picture. I learned from you, and you thickened my skin when I needed it.

-to the people who listen to me on the radio. Thanks. Walking into a grocery store and hearing someone quote back to me something I said on the radio never got old. There were times when I could've used the airwaves to do more for the community or to better entertain you. Sometimes I "mailed it in" and didn't do as good as I could've. You deserved better. If we survive, I'll try to better entertain you...and probably do something dumb to cause me to get fired.

-To my family, my Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. I should've been in more family pictures. When Mom passed away in 98, I promised myself I'd visit more often. That didn't happen...and the reasons I didn't visit, in retrospect, weren't worth it. If the world doesn't end...see you at Whitney's grad next month!

-To the people of Swift Current. Most of you are indifferent to me, some of you like me, some of you hate me and a very small % of you love me. I love this city. If the world ends, I'm glad this spot on the map will be my eternal resting place and I'm glad I'll be among you. This is a great city which I was always proud to represent.

-to my ex wife. We made some great kids. Between all of our faults and good parts, we're lucky they got the combination they did. If this is the end, they made their mark and it was a good one.

-To Christina, if this is Amrageddon, you made my last days awesome. It's cliche, but we were taking on the world and I think we were winning at the end. If there is an afterlife, I really hope you're part of it.

-To Ethan and Eliza, It's my night with you tonight. If the world ends, it will end happily for me.

Finally Friday!

Nice to see the mighty blog gaining back some readers. I abandoned ship from the blogosphere a few months ago, but I'm happy to get back at it on a semi regular basis.

...and I'm sure your life was empty without my musings.

It's an exciting weekend around my house. The history making Cody Snyder Professional Bull Riding Invitational PBR event is stomping into Swift Current at the end of May. It was just confirmed today that I'll be hosting the pre-show at the sold out Credit Union i-Plex.

I'm in talks to host the local Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence ceremony at the end of May as well. I'll need wranglers and a new suit.

...and once again I'll be hosting the Swift Current Bronco Hall of Fame Ceremony. Discuss amongst yourselves the potential inductees. An announcement should be made next week on who will be going into the hall. Today, Bronco play by play guy Shawn Mullin and I got the 411 as to who is going in.

I think the event will be well attended.

It hailed today in Swift Current. About 2 minutes of pea-sized action.

Great job by the local EMS crew to save a local man. If the creek water doesn't recede, a jet propelled boat may be needed to save locals.

Some Randomness

A blog update? Why not?

We are only a few weeks away from the start of Swift Current Indians baseball at Mitchell Field. The WMBL season throws it's first pitch the last week in May. I know the Tribe is looking for billet families for the upcoming season. If you can house an Indian, call Laurie at 741-6773.

Have you heard the WMBL is altering it's player eligibility rules after this season? I'm not fully informed as to what exactly the rules are, but on the surface it appears the WMBL will switch to strictly a summer collegiate league and only allow players actively playing college or university ball.

This is from ballparkbiz It describes the rules.

I like the idea of having strict rules for eligibility and making a more uniform league, but this marks the end of an era for the Swift Current Indians. Gone will be the days of mainstays like Conrad Funk and Kelly Horaska having 15 year careers. This rules affects the Swift Current Indians more than any other team...but I have little doubt Swift Current Indians bench boss, and WMBL coach of the year, Joe Carnahan will adapt.

I do find it an odd coincidence that these rules came into play right after the Swift Current Indians won another league title. I'm sure those happenings aren't related.

I'm sure I'll get a text or e-mail about those last two sentences. I'll post it here when it happens.

In 2013 the league will also expand to Cranbrook, BC. The drive to Cranbrook will be very taxing on small market teams, but the trip will be worth it. They'll have a first class ball park. Cranbrook is one of my favorite western Canadian cities. I hope I get to broadcast games from there.

The Eagle 94.1 is working on bringing Swift Current Indians baseball back to the FM airwaves. New Bronco voice Shawn Mullin and I both interested in calling the action. If everything falls into place, we'll take turns calling Tribe games this season. As of right now, I call dibs on all broadcasts against arch rivals Regina and Okotoks. Mullin can have the 9am Sunday bus rides to Melville.

I will close this portion of the blog by saying that new recruitment rules, and expanded schedule and travel costs are making it VERY tough for a team to make a "go" of it. Let's hope the ball park is packed this season.

Former NHLer Trent McCleary and current NHLer Travis Moen have lent their charity golf tournament to the Swift Current Indians. I'll blog more about this as I get information on it.

The Chilliwack Bruins are on the move to Victoria. The options for names of the new franchise include the Dragons, the Royals and the Capitals.

It's like they never happened...

While I haven't updated this blog much, I have been spending lots of time on facebook. As any blogger will tell you, anonymous comments can be demoralizing. On facebook and twitter, no one can take nameless potshots. Personally, I love getting comments negative and positive. I'll tell you why.

I read a great quote. "people say it's not what you know, it's who you know but that isn't the case either...it's who knows you".

For any bloggers getting slammed with negative comments...don't worry. It's better to be read and hated than not read at all.

This weekend, I'm off to Billings. I won't spend too much $$$ because I believe in shopping local.

Last night I made a trip to Abbey School. I spoke on the subject of reading and writing. The local retired english teacher said she liked my speech. That's as good a compliment a speaker can get. I love visiting small town schools. I know change is inevitable, but hopefully not too many more are forced to close.

Do radio people sign autographs? I don't get asked often, but I signed a few last night.

Swift Current Pet Adoption

In the month of February, people who adopt pets throught the Swift Current SPCA will get a free microchip for their pet.

The tiny chip is injected into the pet and enters it into a national database with the owners contact info.

The City of Calgary implemented this project and the number of animals that needed to be euthanized due to over-crowding at their shelters dropped drastically.

An Update

Three and a half months since there's been any activity on this blog. I can't promise to be hammering off daily updates, but there will be some action on here. Thanks to all the bloggers who have kept me on their blog roll.

Randoms:

-I'll probably do another 'year in review' type deal where I break down the top news stories of 2010 for Swift Current and area. Top news story of the year in Swift Current? Riders? Non resident user fees? Swift Current Indians WMBL Championship? Women's Curling? What do you think?

-It's nice to be doing color commentary on The Swift Current Broncos Broadcasts again. As of now, I'm probably on 2 out of every 3 home games and haven't done a road game yet. I'm hoping to do more in 2011.

-People often ask me 'what is the new Broncos play by play guy like'? Shawn Mullin is very intelligent, very level headed, likes Heineken, KFC and legitimately appears to be becoming a Rider fan. He's from Ottawa though...so that may change soon.

-I'm also asked VERY frequently...'how is Jon Keen doing'? Very good. Life in BC hasn't made him soft yet. Jon is the type of media personality that makes everyone around him better. People who work with Jon and other Kamloops media have likely upped their game since he arrived.

Anyone have any idea who the driver of that van is? Golden West Radio receptionist Shandra Ward snapped that pic in downtown Swift Current. A beat up van with a statue of a nude woman on top. Friends of yours?

-Cardboard recycling, snowy streets and non resident user fees have made 2010 a somewhat stressful year for Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer. If Jerrod runs for Mayor of Swift Current in 2011, he'll still get re-elected...by a lot. I don't think there is anyone in Swift Current that could run against Jerrod and even come close to winning an election against him.

or is there???

-It seems so long ago that the 2010 World Women's Curling Championship was in Swift Current. Did anyone in town benefit more than Mayor Jerrod Schafer? His worship met his girlfriend Kelly Wood there. She was the 3rd for team Scotland. I'd love to hear the story about how they got together.

Is the mayor of Swift Current's relationship status worthy of media attention? I think it is. People love to gossip about relationships, my duty is to reflect what people in Swift Current are talking about.

Or should I just shut up about that kind of stuff and plug the bake sale at the church this weekend...again?

-I'm happy that Tim Tisdale is involved with the Swift Current Legionnaires program again...but was Swift Current Minor Hockey's "hostile takeover" of the local midget AAA hockey team cool? Something seems wrong with Larry Johnson on the outside looking in with regards to "The Legion". Larry has been a huge, positive part of Swift Current for years. Feel free to leave a comment on the issue, but some other blogs in town have already hammered this topic. Shawn Mullin's new blog has the facts and arguments here. Scroll down to the Larry Johnson part of things.

-Sometimes I really miss the days of Jon Keen and myself loading up the station vehicle to drive to Wilcox, Saskatchewan in a blizzard to broadcast Legionnaire hockey over a telephone line. Those stories will make great fodder for sportsman dinners someday...if anyone will have us.

The Voice of the Broncos Moves On

Swift Current, SK---The voice of the Broncos’ Jon Keen is moving on after 10 years broadcasting Swift Current Broncos’ games. Keen has accepted a position with NL Broadcasting in Kamloops as play by play of the Blazers and sports reporter.

Keen, from Lanigan Saskatchewan, was the Broncos play by play voice for the past 7 seasons and did colour commentary on the 3 seasons prior to handling the play by play duties for the Eagle 94.1. Keen is among good company in the Broncos’ play by play booth following in the footsteps of Joey Kenward, Regan Bartel, Elden Moberg and John Enns.

Keen admits it’s tough to leave a place he has been for the last decade. “I'd like to thank the Broncos organization and staff, both past and present, for being so accommodating and fantastic to work with these last ten years. It takes the passion of an entire community to make junior hockey flourish in the smallest market in the CHL, and it has been exciting to see that happen here. The city of Swift Current and the Broncos will always be very special to me, and have contributed greatly to the development of my professional broadcasting career."

Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb has high praise for Keen. “We’d like to thank Jon for his time and dedication to the Broncos. We are grateful to have an excellent relationship with our local radio stations and Jon was a big part of that. We wish Jon the best of luck in his new endeavors in Kamloops.”

The search for Jon’s replacement will begin immediately. All interested parties can send their information to: The Eagle 94.1.

Greetings From Swift Current

Worst blogger ever!

Thanks for coming back to my little corner of the web. I assume you're hear because you follow Rod Pedersen or Jon Keen and saw that I actually updated.

Blogging for Swift Current Online is now part of my job description. I've been putting my extra time into this. Total shameless cross promotion of my radio show. That's the way it's done in 2010.

I will have much to blog about soon. For now, I'm sure the internet can survive without my bleatings.

April Wine played the Sky Center at Living Sky Casino last week. I was unable to attend, but luckily Trent Redekop was able to provide us with a synopsis of the show...

Sold out!

First song at 8:03pm. Anything You Want, You Got it,

* No story telling between songs, just some ramblings.
* The Bar was tested at this event unlike any I've seen before. The line was long, and people were ready to DRINK!
The Show:
Just Between You and Me got a good crowd pop.
Say Hello was the 4th song - sang a little differently, probably because their voices aren't like they were 30 years ago. Still good though!
Enough is Enough
Could Have Been A Lady - finally used some crowd lights. Great song, at his point you could feel the energy and see mullets swaying in the audience.
Band intro - Bass player looked like the big labowski (I thought)

Tanya Tucker in Concert. The Review!

The parking lot outside the Sky Center is loaded with trucks! It can only mean that there is a country music act in town! Wranglers on the men, rhinestone earrings on the women, lets git ready!

Tanya Tucker Living Sky Casino Sky Center May 1st 2010.

Crowd: 565. Tickets $55. Announced as a sell out!

First song is at 8:02. 1978's "Some Kind of Trouble".

7 piece band. 2 back up singers. 1 Tanya Tucker

We're in for a good show. The normally stone faced and stoic security guard in front of the stage is grooving to the music!

Tanya is dressed in black. She is now 52 years old with a very commanding stage presence. She was 13 when she had her first hit song...to say this isn't her first rodeo is an understatement.

Four fans in the front of the stage gives Tanya's platinum blond hair a constant look of 'standing in the wind'.

Her voice is untouched by time. All the songs sound just as good as they did on the radio. Back up singers are there...butnot to compensate for a detiorating voice like many of the old school acts. Vocals are all Tanya.

Tanya Tucker had her first hit song in 1972 at age 13 with Delta Dawn. She was a prominent female country star in the 70's. The 80's weren't as good for Tanya, but she made a comeback in the 90's. Her show reflected that.

Her 1st number one hit, 1974's "What's Your Momma's Name" went over huge with the Swift Current crowd. I would say that I was WELL below the average age.

About 40 minutes into the show, Tanya took a breather and showcased her niece, Cali as well as her daughter Presley and son Grayson. They each did a song while Tanya had a wardrobe change. This was only the fourth time they had performed as part of a tour. People appreciated their talent...but were happy to see Tanya back.

Tanya busted out her version of "In the Ghetto". Her voice sold the song very well.

A few songs later, we get her version of Amazing Grace. She then closed with Delta Dawn.

Show is over at 9:13. Crowd asks for an encore, but the houselights come on and it's time to hit the blackjack table!

To sum up:

Tanya Tucker sounded great. Her polished stage presence was an excellent compliment to her music. The majority of the crowd wanted to hear her 70's hits like "What's Your Momma's Name", "Lizzie and the Rainman" and "Delta Dawn". They got that. A nice mix of her 1990's CMT era hits filled out the show nicely. While some eyebrows may have been raised at the show that clocked in at 1 hour 11 minutes with a twenty minute break for Tanya in the middle of it...she covered the bases and played all the songs one would want to hear at a Tanya Tucker show.

Her songs were all short. You can squeeze them in over an hour.

During the show, Tanya herself, gave props to the beautiful facility that is the Sky Center. She's right. There isn't a bad seat in the place and the sound and acoustics are amazing.

Flame On!

If you live in Swift Current and saw smoke coming from the south side of town Thursday around noon...here is why:

It appeared to be a controlled burn to get rid of the remaining structures near an abandoned house that burned down a few months ago.

The smoke clouds were seen around the city...and with any fire in Swift Current, it drew a large crowd.

No one brought marshmallows.

It's Official: The Hunter Brothers are Going to be BIG!

While surfing facebook, I found the debut music video from Shaunavon's Hunter Brothers. On this single "Breakin' My Heart' Dusty carries the mail with most of the vocals, while the camera and director really seem to have a fondness for former Bronco captain Luke.
The video is as good as anything you'll see on Much More Music.

Five muscially talented, good looking ex hockey players. A juno is imminent...

Still Alive!

The last few weeks have not provided much chance for blogging.

Actually...

There has been lots of chances to blog...but also chances to enjoy beautiful weather.

I'll be in Regina this weekend to host the Provincial Bodybuilding and Figure Classic. I always enjoy a roadie to Regina.

I do keep my blackberry with me all the time and rock the twitter as much as I can. Here is what I've chronicled through "tweets".

The wind from April 6th destroys the cemetary gates at Elrose.

A trip to a pub in Saskatoon shows the pride of Morse Saskatchewan Dick Macinnis on the entertainment bill. Once upon a time, I judged a talent show that Dick won. I'll cling to that story when he's famous.

A souvenir from the PA city police in the form of a speeding ticket. It would seem that PA doesn't have much crime, and local police have lots of time to cherry pick speeders leaving town.

The Living Sky Casino has some good shows coming up over the summer months. The Sky Center is a top notch facility...I'm looking forward to taking them in. This blog will provided detailed concert recaps and dates of upcoming shows too.

Swift Current Indians baseball season is approaching too. Although The Eagle 94.1 is not broadcasting games, I'm working on a deal to webcast for the tribe. I'll keep you posted.

For 'On Air' Types...

In 2010, one of the biggest pet peeves for many broadcasters is the excessive amounts of times they are required to make plugs to sponsors. It's extra cash for the station or broadcast company, but the announcer seldom sees any extra gravy. You hear it on every sports broadcast and radio morning show.

I did enjoy listening to Vic Rauter forcibly pimp 'Cashmere Toilet Paper' during the World Women's Curling championship. I wonder what his reaction was when he saw that script for the first time?

If the national voice of curling has to tell the nation of the soft feel of cashmere, it makes me feel better about selling my soul a dozen times a day.

Montreal Canadiens forward, and Swift Current offseason resident, Travis Moen will be the most bad ass looking guy in a cowboy hat at the Frontier Days Saloon.

Moen took a stray skate to the face earlier this week. It does take the eye away from his sad attempt at a playoff beard.

It Sure is Monday

I know I'm getting old. Wrestlemania was yesterday, and not only was I not aware of that, but I spent the afternoon watching women's curling. Wow.

I spent Saturday in the park with my daughter. Kids were playing. There were two boys running around. One had a mullet, one was wearing a Habs jersey. Which kid has worse parents?

Hello from Regina

A quick update from the lobby of the Regina Inn. Tonight is game number four in the Broncos/Wheat Kings series. With the Wheat Kings up 3-0 in the series and the game being played more than two hours away from fans of either of the teams...if could be a quiet end to the Broncos season.

'Win or lose, hit the booze' I'll be hurrying home to Swift Current for tomorrow's Magic 97 morning show...and the Tom Foolery of the Keith's Patch at the Credit Union i-Plex.

Roadie to Regina

It looks like a done deal. I'll be joining Jon Keen in the broadcast booth for the Swift Current Broncos "home games" in the 2010 WHL playoffs in Regina. The full time color gig still belongs to Tim Tisdale, but he's not available for round 1.

This is awesome. WHL playoff hockey is amazing to watch. To be able to help broadcast it will likely be the highlight of my broadcast year.

The Bronco "home games" in Regina are a part of Swift Current's history. Regardless of the outcome of the hockey games, this will be a unique bit of Bronco folklore and I'm honored to be a small part of it.

The last time I rode shotgun with Jon Keen in Regina, it was a memorable game 5 upset for the Broncos in the 2008 playoffs. That was the night Bronco fans hijacked the Brandt Center crowd to cheer the team on to victory. Swift Current fans will likely bring that enthusiasm back to the Queen City and hopefully make some friends with the hockey saavy Pat's fans.

In a press release yesterday, Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer publicly thanked Regina mayor Pat Fiacco and the Regina Pats for a 'home away from home' close to Swift Current.

I echo that.

This is great for Swift Current fans. with all due respect to Lethbridge and PA, this is the best choice for Bronco fans. It's the closest, most of us know our way around Regina, and we can stock up on Rider gear between games. If anyone has a spare Teubert jersey, I'd gladly wear it Tuesday and Wednesday.

Finally Friday! Regina Bound!

Lets throw some thoughts at the keyboard and see what sticks...

The Swift Current Broncos home away from home for the 2010 WHL playoffs will be the Brandt Center in Regina. The Broncos are getting the boot from the Credit Union i-Plex for the 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championships. While sexy sweepers take to the ice in Swift...I predict a VERY pro Bronco crowd in Regina.

Why? Am I nuts? What about the Regina/Swift Current rivalry?

Regina will embrace the Broncos because of the team Swift Current has...and the opposition. Regardless of the opponent being Brandon, Calgary or Saskatoon it is a neutral sight game. When people don't have an emotional or financial investment in a team...they will instinctively cheer for the underdog. It's hard wired. We can't help it. Swift will be the underdog. I team that barely made the playoffs that got the boot from it's own rink.

People also root against the villian. Saskatoon has a team full of "love to hate players". Calgary is the league powerhouse...The annoying neighbour with the nice house, the new boat and the perfect children. The Broncos are the small town team just trying to get some extra playoff revenue for some new toys for the dressing room. People relate to that. That match up would turn into a Sask vs. Alberta match up...and Regina people are passionate for all things Saskatchewan.

and if it's Brandon...

The second Kelly McCrimmon tries to bend the ear of the officials and sway things in favor of the Wheat Kings...the sports saavy Regina crowd will turn on him and the Wheat Kings in a heartbeat. Mark Lamb is the hard working coach that talks to his players, not the stripes.

...and Cody Eakin is the kind of hockey player fans love to cheer.

Some people in Regina may say they're pulling for "anyone but Swift Current". By the time the series hits the Brandt Center...I bet you some Brandt Ceter mini donuts they have a change of heart. The Broncos have grown on Swift Current over the last 24 years...they'll grow on Regina too.

Campaigning Fail

Did you watch the Men's Ice Hockey Gold Medal game on Sunday?

Of course you did. 16 million Canadians watched it.

Did you see federeal NDP Leader Jack Layton mugging for the camera at Wayne Gretzky's in Toronto?

Everyone's favortie mustachioed, socialist leader in the house of commons saw a great opportunity to get some face time on our nation's biggest sports broadcast ever.

...and he wasn't thrilled when a legit hockey fan got between him and the camera during the celebrations. Check out the video below. Bottom of the screen at :14, see Jack move a young lady's arm out of the way so he can get some nation wide CTV love. The awkward glance she gave him as he posed was pretty funny.

Field of Dreams This Saturday/Cannon Fodder For Speakers

This Saturday night in Swift Current, Rider running back Wes Cates and NHL legend Gerry Cheevers will hopefully find their way through the fog to the Legion. It's the annual Field of Dreams Fundraising Dinner for the Swift Current Indians WMBL team.

Yesterday, my good friend Cory, who has been to many of these dinners, remarked how I've been abused verbally by guest speakers over the years. After I introduce the speakers, a quick jab at me tends to follow. I'm going on memories for these so it may not be exact. Some of the highlights include...

Rider Receiver Matt Dominguez: (whispering in my ear just after the introduction) "Go back and do it again...this time introduce me as a 2007 Grey Cup Champion".

Former Leader Post Editor Bob Hughes: "Thank you very much Ryan...(pause)...for sitting down and shutting up.

Rider Fullback Chris Szarka, after I made a joke about his saw accident: "It's great coming to a community and meeting great people and having a great time...but someone always ruins that...and in Swift Current that always seems to be Ryan. (showing a fist with his grey cup ring) Yeah Ryan, I got all ten fingers and I'll use them to put 2007 Grey Cup Champions on your forehead."

NHL Legend Dennis Hull: "Thank you very much...whoever you are! I always love coming to a place like Swift Current and getting introduced by a total nobody."

NHL Penalty Minute King Dave "Tiger" Williams: "I can't believe I come home to Swift Current and I get introduced by some guy with an earring. Every town has a queer".

Tuesday Brain Dump

Finally an update! Life has been busy...and without my valuable crackberry, keeping up to date in the over communicated world has been tough.

But you come to this blog to be entertained...and not for excuses!

Family Day Disaster!

An elderly woman drove into Pharmasave on Monday. I'm guessing she wasn't texting and driving...but you never know. Thanks to Swift Current Online for the photo. Personally, I would have tried to get closer than 100 yards away to take the picture...but that's just me.

Family Show...at the Casino???

Friday night I was honored to MC a show for the Swift Current Allied Arts Council's Koncerts for Kids program. It was Magical Moments in Time, with illusionist Ted Outerbridge and his wife/assistant Marion.

Marion's costume choices pushed the "family show" boundaries. They're from Quebec...that's how they roll.

I was talking to Ted and Marion backstage and they were confused by the idea of a family show at a casino. The Living Sky Casino staff did an awesome job of separating the kids from the black jack tables.

Speaking of the casino...

The Sky Center continues to be my home away from home. This Sunday, Lasting Impressions Photography is hosting a wedding show. Doors open at 1. You getting married in 2010? You can get advance tickets at The Glass Slipper Spa, Body Fit and the Lasting Impressions studio.

...and yes, I do see a hint of irony in a guy who is going through a separation hosting a wedding show.

In a 24 hour span this weekend, I will have MC'd a sportsman's dinner and a wedding show. This Saturday is the night Rider running back Wes Cates and Boston Bruins legend Gerry Cheevers are in town for the annual Swift Current Indians fundraising dinner. This is ALWAYS a fun event. I did not MC any pow-wow related events this past weekend though. Maybe next year. How did Swift Current's first Pow Wow go? I heard 1000 people at the Stockade.

I hit the casino to gamble on Saturday night. It was my first time at the black jack table...ever. I owe a huge thanks to the dealer and others at the table for being patient with me. First time at the table...several drinks into the evening and I stayed on 8 and asked for hit on 19. The pony-tailed pit boss was itching to throw me out in the cold.

I prefer the tom boyish, Monday to Friday on TSN, non made up Jennifer Hedger to the big haired, too much foundation, dress wearing version covering the Olympic Games. I bet she doesn't know how to walk in heels.

I think the Olympic coverage has been spectacular. TSN and sportsnet working together??? Incredible. This is Canadian television at it's finest.

Tuesday Brain Dump

-My facebook status today:

Groundhog day in Swift Current; If a rat sees his shadow, you have to wait six more weeks to get your street plowed. HIYO! It's 6:20!

...and that triggered a variety of comments.

The guys on the snow removal crews have worked hard the last few weeks. They deserve big props. One can argue their priorities and what streets they have plowed vs. what they haven't...but the fact is they have put in some long days and deserve some props.

Yes, we're all going to need a spring wheel alignment...but that is hardly unique to 2010 and our current decision makers.

Try spending a winter in Manitoba. The snow we had last week...they get once every two weeks and the province grinds to a halt when it happens.

We have it good.

I'm just a radio morning guy with a lot of bills, a little disposable income and the need to find humour people can relate to. Don't take what I say too seriously.

The City of Swift Current now has TWO bylaw enforecment officers. Two men in uniform handing out parking tickets. Parking spots in downtown Swift used to be hard to come by, but that pic shows some vacant spots during a busy time of day.

I haven't had a parking ticket in 2010. Knock on wood.

Idol Crowned

That was fun! Four of Swift Current's most talented musicians took to the stage Friday night to battle it out for $5000 and the title of Living Sky Idol.

Myshel Pajuaar's old school country performances, and a wardrobe change between songs, helped her become the 1st ever Living Sky Idol

I'll be honest. The finals belonged to Myshel Pajuaar. From the judges table, it was clear that she was #1 on this night. Lana Empey, John Berggren and Clete Rekve all entertained the crowd of more than 600 people...but Myshel was hot at the right time. She saved her best for last.

With the Sky Center at full capacity, and people trying to catch a glimpse from the hallway, Myshel was awarded the prize of $5000 cash and the chance to sing O Canada at last night's Bronco game. I heard she did a solid job on the anthem...even adding her unique sound to it.

Finally Friday!

Tonight it's the finals of Living Sky Idol in the magnificent Sky Center. The winner gets $5000 cash. If you're planning on going, show up around 6:30 for the 7:30 show. The place will be stuffed. Last week, extra chairs were brought into the 565 seat facility. Tonight, there is concern they may have to turn people away.

I'll be at the judges table. The time for comedy is over. $5000 is a lot of money. The final four are:

Brad Woods, president of the Swift Current Indians appeals to the Community to follow through on its pledge to support.

With the start of a new calendar year, the Swift Current Indians Board of Directors reconvened in preparation for the 2010 season. Riding high on the recent announcement by the City of Swift Current regarding the successful repayment of the stadium lights, President Brad Woods was optimistic about the future of the community’s Western Major Baseball League franchise.

“The initial support by the community following our October Public Meeting, gave us enough confidence to commit to the 2010 season at the WMBL’s Annual general Meeting in early December. Following that commitment, a positive announcement by the City just prior to Christmas seemed to be a good sign on our decision to move forward,” stated Indians President Brad Woods. “I believe we all (Board) entered into the holiday season with a renewed optimism for the coming year.”

Last night’s board meeting showed that the confidence and optimism felt may have been premature. The sponsorship committee reported to the Board that the commitment made before the holiday is yet to be seen in actual advertising and sponsorship dollars raised.

“Our initial success prior to the holidays may have in fact had an adverse effect on the sponsorship committee and their ability to sell advertising and sponsorships for 2010,” said Woods following last nights meeting. “I think we may have had too much good news too early. The announcement by the City in no way solves our immediate need to sell advertising and sponsorships. We still have a $50,000” Advertising and Sponsorships” budget line to cover. ”

For the next couple of months, representatives from the ball club will continue to meet with businesses and residents in the community securing marketing packages and season tickets for the upcoming year. The SC Indians are an important part of summers in Swift Current offering another opportunity for summer recreation and entertainment for residents. The WMBL is the premier baseball league in Western Canada offering a high quality product for fans in Swift Current and Southwest Saskatchewan. On the field, The SC Indians Baseball Club has been a perennial powerhouse well respected across the league. Since the team's re-inception into the league in 1985, the team has made the playoffs an unprecedented 23 times in 24 years, playing in the championship final on 14 occasions, with nine league championships titles earned.

Mac-T Tomorrow and Reader Contributions

It's a cold one this morning. Wind chill factos making things feel like -33 today.

Tomorrow morning, have some breakfast with Craig Mactavish. The annual Swift Current Broncos/Special Olympics fundraiser moves to the Sky Center. The four time Stanley Cup winner, TSN analyst and former Oiler coach will be the guest speaker. Call the Bronco office for ticket info at 773-1509.

I'll be hosting. Be there at 7am...we'll have you out and off to work by 8:30.

With the career "Mac-T" had and the stories he could tell, it's a shame he'll be limited to around 20 minutes. Mactavish will be back in the show before you know it.

Tuesday Brain/Garbage Dump

-Thanks to everyone who left a comment yesterday on this blog regarding snow removal. I know a few people on City Council read this blog. Good, bad or otherwise, your comments will be seen by the right eyes. If you still have a snow removal opinion you want to share...fire away.

-Last night city crews did my street. At about 10:30pm I heard the plow working outside my window.

I WAS TRYING TO SLEEP!!! HONESTLY, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT LATE NIGHT RACKET!!!! (kidding...KIDDING!)

Kudos to the grader operators for putting in a long day yesterday. So many major streets are clean. Good thing they were so well rested from a relaxing weekend. (KIDDING!)

Our streets will be tip top by the end of today. A convoy of machinery thundered down 1st NW into downtown Swift Current at 5:30 this morning. No punchline.

I've enjoyed having a blog during our city's newsmaking events. Looking back on this blog years from now, you'll see our city's big events chronicled here. If only this blog was around for events like the casino plebiscite and the Paul Elder extortion trial. Imagine the anonymous comments those stories would have generated.

Actually, it's probably for the best that this blog wasn't around for that. I wish I still had some of the audio from angry calls to the radio station. 2002 was a passionate year in Swift Current.

-Remember this girl from every sports highlight reel last week?

She was caught on camera in Calgary at a Flames/ Pittsburgh Penguins game. She is 23 year old Kristyne De Mott, who is from Drumheller, Alberta. Kristyne, for the time being, is my most famous friend on facebook.

Sarah, Mr. Lahey and Cyrus from Trailer Park Boys are close seconds.

Lucy unfriended me.

-It's nice to still be relevant in the Broncos/Pats feud. Rod Pedersen and Jon Keen have both recently blogged of two fake rats being thrown on the ice during a Broncos/Pats game in Regina. The rats had KEEN and SWITZER etched in them.

The 2007/08 season and post season was a memorable one. The Broncos/Pats feud hit a fever pitch thanks in large part to all the blogs involved. Thankfully, things have cooled down.

-I've heard that Regina will likely be in the new Canadian Monopoly game. If you are the car game piece and you land on Dewdney, your car gets stripped down and your money gets robbed. However, if you land on the Regina square and have to go to jail...you'll accidentally be released early.

-No school buses running again today in Swift Current due to the snow. I'm all for kids safety, but it doesn't seem that bad. That call was made yesterday afternoon. The issue is that the streets are driveable, but as the buses pull up to the curbs, which have collected all the snow, the unweighted buses get stuck. That's the world from Susan Parsons-White, facebook friend and school bus driver.

Our parents told us they "walked uphill to school in blizzards". We will tell our kids, "we took the bus no matter how cold it was or how deep the snow was".

Bus Cancellations

Magic 97 has just got the official word that urban school buses in Swift Current aren't running today. That is for both Chinook and Catholic schools. Rural parents are asked to contact their regular bus drivers to see if they are running today. Schools are open today, but it is up to the parents discretion when it comes to transportation.

Also...

No school buses running in Shaunavon today. Schools are open though...same thing with the parents discretion.

As I type this, NO snow plows have been seen in any part of Swift Current since the snow began on Friday.

My SUV is doing pretty well in these conditions. If you need a lift, shoot me a text.

I just got off the phone with Tracy from the Chinook School Division. Even though the temperature won't call for it...it is likely that School Buses won't be running tomorrow (Monday) morning. More details tomorrow morning on Magic 97 and at this blog.

After several days of temperatures above freezing, winter returned with A VENGEANCE the weekend of January 23rd and 24th!

Saturday the 24th, the snowstorm knocked out power from about 9pm to 10pm, halting the Swift Current Broncos/Regina Pats WHL hockey game, stopping the flow of scotch at Robbie Burns Night and interrupting Canadian music legend Tom Cochrane performing "Big League" at Swift Current's Living Sky Casino.

Upon Cochrane's return to the stage his comment about playing in "No Current" got a few chuckles.

All throughout Sunday lights continued to flicker, and the power did go off again from about 6:45 to 7pm.

Here are some shots I took during the Sunday snow day after about 20 cms had fallen.

People woke up to see their vehicles trapped in their parking spaces.

Some Late Pics From the Torch Relay In Swift Current

I'm a dollar short and a day late on posting these pics. I haven't had much time for blogging, twittering and facebooking the last few weeks.

My blackberry died. I was unable to charge it. I had to send back to Mr. Balsillie. I should be back to geeking out with my crackberry in 5-7 weeks. My contributions to social networking and the blogosphere will take a hit...so it's all about what I do on the radio these days.

The radio show has been fun lately. I haven't had this much fun on the radio and in the community since the 2002 Eagle 94.1 days. Kim and Jon in the morning and Switzer in the afternoon.

Finally Friday!

-Tonight is another edition of Living Sky Idol at the local SIGA casino in Swift Current. I have the pleasure of being one of the judges. I've been compared to Simon Cowell...which isn't really what I'm going for.

If I wanted to be Simon, I'd wear a tight V-neck and talk in a British accent. I'm just making an honest assessment. One of the other judges asked me if I was afraid of "getting beat up" after my comments.

The quality of singers is impressive. If you find yourself without anything 'on the go' tonight...and you're over 19, come check it out in the impressive Sky Center. Last week was packed.

While the judges do offer their thoughts, the audience picks the winner. Curtis Cardinal, pictured below is down to the final eight. My comment last week was that his performance was like a "back up plan for a bachelorette party".

The Swift Current crowd loves him though.

We'll see what happens tonight.

-Hey Rod, thanks for the mention in Rodservations blog. I do think I was misquoted Roddy. I didn't say "cesspool".

"Classless" would be more accurate.

Call it what you will, Rod is getting more hits than most websites in this province. When the opinionated Regina sports fan needs to vent about The Pats and Riders, Rod's blog is the first stop.

I'd be lying if I didn't said it was the first blog I check every morning. What's that saying about not being to look away from a violent car wreck?

-Speaking of Regina sports folk...thanks to Mitchell Blair for some linkage earlier this week.

-Tom Cochrane has a couple shows in Swift Current this weekend. He will do a show Saturday and Sunday at the Sky Center. I was lucky enough to see him in Minnedosa, Manitoba in my Brandon radio days. That was back in 2001, a time when on air people got tickets to shows.

I need to get off the internet and prepare for a full Friday at the station. More soon...

Olympic Torch Day!

It is spring time in Swift Current today. Snow is melting, birds are chirping and the Olympic Torch is coming to town. Details below.

A few summers ago I was honored to make the trip to Maple Creek to MC 'Zack Smith Day'. It was a day of celebrations to honor the former Bronco captain's signing with the Ottawa Senators.

Last night, Smitty was called by the big team for a game against Florida. With #47 on his back and fire in his belly he dropped the mitts with Bryan Allen. Smitty got tagged pretty good at the beginning of this tilt, but hung on and landed a good shot :13 seconds in. You don't get a good look the right hand from Zack the first time, but the replay shows it well.

Olympic Torch and some NFL watching is the plan today. To any TV producer readers out there, answer me this...why are celebrations always cut away from? Once a player starts a sack celebration or a post TD celebration they always go to another camera. NFL or CFL. The Hamilton Tiger Cat boat celebration deserved way more attention this past CFL season. Best post TD action you never saw.

Olympic Torch Arrives in Swift Current Tomorrow

Tragedy in Kindersley yesterday. The "rink" is the heart of a small town. It's where the senior hockey teams play and where people meet for minor hockey practices. As the kids skate around the ice...coffee is drank, stories are exchanged and in summer...cabarets happen after slow pitch tournaments. Below is a pic of what happened yesterday in Kindersley to their "old rink".

Something for the 2011 World Juniors...

I had a chuckle when I saw that. I am actually a big fan of Pierre McGuire. I like his style and I get something from every broadcast he's on. A few years ago, the TSN play by play crew of Gord Miller and Pierre made an appearance at the Legion for a 'Home Hardware Legionnaire' fundraiser. Gord and Pierre were both awesome to talk to. A large crew of us went to BP's with them and they didn't "big league" anyone. What you get on camera is what you get in person with the two of them.

If I was Pierre I would print that off, and have it next to me every broadcast. Of 12 million viewers, I'm sure a few would be playing along, and I'd give them a good time!

Finally Friday!

My first few days as an entrepreneur have been good. Alphavoice.ca seen seen lots of traffic and a few fun jobs are on the horizon. Thanks for checking out the site. If you want to change the sound of your business, visit the site and lets work something out. I would like nothing better than to be the voice of your telephone system, radio station, store announcements, corporate presentations etc. I have done some cool projects locally and some sweet things around the world are cooking up as well.

Alright enough of that...I promise I won't turn this blog into an infomercial.

-In the world, there are firemen who will intentionally start a fire so they can put it out. They need to be a hero and feel needed. Thankfully all firemen in Swift Current are just studly guys in uniform. My point is there are lots of people with this same mentality. They will create drama where there is none, just so they can swoop in and save the day.

Before you go cry on some one's shoulder, be sure you actually NEED a shoulder to cry on...You're stronger than you think.

-The city crews have been busy removing snow this week. Here they are at work at 5am. A resolution for 2010...to start carrying an actual digital camera. As a reader of this blog YOU DESERVE BETTER than fuzzy crackberry pics.

-Tomorrow, the local Kinsmen will be doing their annual Christmas tree pick up. If you have a real tree, leave it on your front lawn and they'll take care of it for you.

As the Kinsmen pick up your trees, as a favor to them, don't ask them about Bronco hockey. They have a lot of city to cover in a day...and most kinsmen I know LOVE to talk Broncos and don't pass up the chance to have their thoughts known.

You can also drop your trees off at The Wheatland Mall North parking lot, The Credit Union i-Plex, Fairview Arena and the BMX track by the old St. Pat's school.

-By the time you read this, Eric Tillman will NOT be the GM of the Riders. A sad end to his tenure as Riders GM. Saskatchewan Roughrider football has united the 306 for the last few years...sadly the Eric Tillman issue has divided us.

If he wants to stay, we should let him. If the victim's family can forgive him...why can't everyone else? Just my opinion and I could be wrong...

It's not that simple though...and I don't think Eric wants to stay anymore.

-In Regina it's Jordan Eberle/Colton Teubert day. Charismatic Regina mayor Pat Fiacco decided to honor the two Regina Pats players that suited up for Team Canada. Yesterday, someone commented on this blog that Teubert should "sit the day out".

I disagree. Both young men have represented Canada on the national hockey stage for two holiday seasons. While they get all the glory for winning, they put themselves out there for criticism when things don't go well. The pressure these kids have to deal with as a 19 year old is something most never have to deal with in their lifetimes.

Yesterday on this blog and on twitter, I made the statement that Eberle and Teubert combined for an amazing 14 points in just 6 games. That comment didn't go over well with someone in the Regina media who also patrols twitter.

Relax! I said it to to give props to Eberle and not to knock Teubert. If you made that same joke at a Regina Pats function, you'd get a good reaction from the room. Try it. It'll go over well, I promise.

-I'm a little nervous about the Swift Current Broncos charity breakfast later this month. I'm MCing the event, which Craig MacTavish is the guest speaker for...and that's fine. It's my first Bronco MC gig with new coach and GM Mark Lamb. Dean Chynoweth and I had a good thing going at banquets and functions over the years. We established a good rapport and had some good times at functions we were both speaking at.

One of my favorites: "I asked Dean if he wanted to trade his orange juice for my apple juice, and I ended up getting a half empty cup of coffee for my entire breakfast" I remarked the morning after the David Schulz/Ned Lukacevic deal at the GM's breakfast. "Dean knows how to made a trade".

Wes Cates Coming to Town!

The Broncos are hosting "Faith" night at the Credit Union i-Plex January 13th. Saskatchewan Roughrider running back Wes Cates will be a special guest. Details can be found here.

This should get fans to the game. Rider appearances always command a crowd in Swift Current. The i-Plex will be packed for this one...but likely won't have too many men.

Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco proclaims Friday, January 8, 2010 as "Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert Day" in the city for their outstanding contribution to Team Canada at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship.

"Jordan and Colten are incredible young athletes and excellent ambassadors for Regina," said Mayor Fiacco. "In a time when sport celebrities don't always portray the image we would want children to emulate, Jordan and Colten are the kind of role models young people can look up to."

Eberle and Teubert represented Regina at two Team Canada showings at the World Junior Hockey Championship. Each were recognized for their leadership by being appointed assistant captains to the team during the 2010 tournament.

Eberle and Teubert combined for an amazing 14 points in just six games!

Midnight Switzervations

-I'm still in the midst of some time off from the Mighty Magic 97 Morning Show. Actually being able to sleep in past 4:10am has messed with my schedule, so a midnight blog entry is my best way to deal with insomnia.

Team Canada dropped at 6-5 decision to the Americans to end the 2010 IIHF World Junior Hockey tournament in Saskatoon. This has to be devastating for the coaches and players on the team. Looking to win their 6th straight, expectations where meteoric. Anything less than a gold for Canada in hockey at any level is always a let down. As a fan, after the Rider's Grey Cup loss, watching the US score the OT goal was pretty "meh".

The US has to be the favorites to win next year too. Defending champs, home ice and a lots of returning players. I'm sure Canada won't mind being the underdogs for once.

-"Eh, Oh Canada Go"...nothing else to say and why beat a dead horse? Worst marketing idea since Clear Pepsi.

-After many years of talking about it, and a few weeks of planning, alphavoice.ca my home based voice over business is up and running. The majority of people hate the sound of their own voice...so now you can let me do the talking for you. Surf into my services section and see if there is something I can do for you.

-Thanks Mitchell Blair for the plug on your blog. We share a fondness for World Junior Hockey and Patrick Dempsey ads.

-Companies who advertise on TSN get great bang for their buck. If you're a hockey or CFL fan, you'll have their ads emblazoned on your subconscious whether you like it or not. During football season, we had a steady diet of Tim Horton's French Onion soup ads, mixed in with Wendy's and Matt Dunigan pimping Wiser's. During World Juniors, it seemed every time play stopped we were treated to Patrick Dempsey's hair, followed by a bartender saying "take the best day of your life...and put it in your mouth". That ad did make Canada/Latvia entertaining.

...and destiny also doesn't drive to practice in a sweet black puffy black jacket like Jarome Iginla.

-Lady Gaga's Poker Face is on the new Mini Pops Album. Is that inappropriate? Should I just be quiet and go shoo kids off my lawn?

I read a great quote over the holidays...and I wish I could remember who said it. "It's not what you know, and it's not who you know...it's who knows you". In 2009, Lady Gaga made sure we knew her...by any means necessary.

-Many people went through 2009 without watching any televised wrestling. WWE and TNA Wrestling are going all out to get YOU watching wrestling in 2010. TNA pulled Hulk Hogan out of reality TV/TMZ purgatory, while WWE brought back Bret Hart. Mike Tyson will be on WWE's Monday Night Raw this coming Monday. Nostalgia is a potent marketing tool, and people who market wrestling want to transport you to 1997!

-The Buffalo Brew Pub in Swift Current has a giant walk in cooler. It's kind of neat walking into the cooler on a very cold day...and being warmer...in the cooler.

If you live in Swift Current, and have never ate a meal at the Brew Pub, you are not getting the most out of our city. Big Dave knows how to cook.

-People seem to be texting and driving more now. Is it because it's illegal and rebellious to do so? Thrill seekers are getting a rush from it! The fine for texting and driving is now $280. The fine for having open liquor in your ride is $180. Someone in a decision making position does NOT want you tweeting while behind the wheel!

-Did you know the last two head coaches of the Swift Current Broncos both played for the Medicine Hat Tigers? I'm sure Jon has mentioned that at some point. Coach Mark Lamb's mom pointed that out to me...in between a few parenting tips.

No school like the old school.

-Craig MacTavish is coming to town. I am honored to MC the charity breakfast he will be speaking at on January 28th. The story is here. Anyone who grew up, or watched hockey during the Oilers dynasty, it will be awesome to meet "Mac-T". Maybe he'll have a few explanations for current Oiler fans too.

The fabled Haggis. If you're attending Burns Night, and aren't sure what it is...it's best you don't know.

-Robbie Burns Night is January 23rd at the Legion. I have been asked to host the annual celebration of 'all things Scottish'. the local Green Braes Pipes and drums band does an excellant job of bringing the "Twa Lands" to the Legion every year. Burns Night features Haggish and Scotch. The Special Olympics Charity Breakfast is a delicious catered meal. I know which one I'm looking more forward to eating at...

-February 20th is the annual Field of Dreams Sports Dinner. It's a Saturday Night. It is the major fundraiser for the Swift Current Indians of the WMBL. I am hosting that event too, but don't know as of yet who the guest speakers are. Last year's lineup of Chris Szarka and Darryl Sittler will be tough to match. Most people who have attended every year agree Szarka was the best speaker yet. Scott Schultz a close second.

-The Olympic Torch makes it's way to Swift Current on Sunday. There is entertainment and games in the Stockade from 4-6pm with the Torch arriving around 6. I'll be hosting the entertainment stage events and broadcasting on Magic 97. Local Special Olympian Katie Durant will be the star of the show, bringing the torch to the cauldron and lighting it up.

-"Two-Thousand-Ten" or "Twenty Ten"?

Happy New Year

One final post of 2009. This blog will be back better than ever in 2010. Expect a few small changes.

Where did ten years go? What would the person you were in 1999 think of the person you are today? Who would you like to be in 2019?

If there is one lesson I learned in the last ten years it is "Never get too high after a win or too low after a loss". True words in sports...and in life.

An Update

I'm off work for the most part this week. Someones NEEDS to be on location at Fine Furniture Oasis on Magic 97 tomorrow morning, so I will break from my holidays to tell you of great deals on furniture, matresses, appliances and electronics.

The MOST you will ever pay for a cab ride within Swift Current city limits is just under $22. Last night, my good friend Shane (owner of the Lowenblog, link on the right) and I hit BP's Lounge for some drinks. BP's is on the North East corner of Swift Current. My place, on the South West side of town, is at opposite ends of the city. There you go. One end of Swift, to the other is $21.80.

New Years resolution...to be nicer to everyone, to not to any shots at anyone on the air, on the blog, behind their back or to their face and to keep my words soft and sweet..because someday I may have to eat them.

Happy New Year...if I don't see you before then.

God Bless Latvia!

Last night the Credit Union i-Plex hosted a IIHF pre-tournament game between Russia and Latvia.

That was a fun night at the rink!

About 2400 fans SOLIDLY behind the underdog Latvians where treated to some good back and forth action between the two eastern countries.

The teams played physical. The play was not as disciplined as the western style we watch every game. Lots of exciting scoring chances happened at both ends. Good goaltending.

NHL first round draft pick Nikita Filitov of the Columbus Blue Jackets scored off a sweet one timer in the 2nd period. He wasn't going at 100% by any means, but he started to play late in the 3rd period.

The Russians mailed it in...and they lost. They got 48 shots on goal, but weren't going hard after rebounds, crashing the crease and paying with much fire. Latvian goaltending was really good. Arturs Irbe good. The home crowd was brought to their feet when Roberts Bukarts scored the OT winner :14 seconds into the extra frame.

Latvia had some key penalty kills late in the game. Swift Current referee "favorites" Chris Savage and Devon Klein once again did their best to send Bronco fans home unhappy.

..and the music at the rink was awesome! Fans heard Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans" and Tupac's "California Love" all in the same game.

Was it in poor taste to play "Rasputin" though? Prolly not.

It Sure Is Monday

-As this post is being written Tiger Woods mistress count is up to 14.

The actual number has to be much higher than that. Seriously, that's 14 women who have hired attorney's to handle this situation or used their affair for publicity. Most women wouldn't want their 15 minutes of fame to include the word "mistress"...regardless of who the guy is. It's safe to say that Tiger couldn't leave the house without having some sort of encounter with an adult entertainer or "escort".

If you hooked up with a married guy, would you tell the world? Would you tell anyone? I would guess 99% of the female population wouldn't.

So if 14 have come forward...and 99% of his conquests haven't...

-Have you seen the 'Lights for Life' display in Swift Current?

It is a large collection of lights that is set to Christmas Music. It's also conveniently located across the street from Wal-Mart behind Canadian Tire. The light show runs every half hour and is clearly visible from the #1 highway on the east side of town. The whole production is very well done.

-I did brave Wal-Mart last night around 8pm. Pretty tame actually.

-Yesterday was a unique day for me. I spent the afternoon watching some NFL football with Swift Current Indians coach Joe Carnahan. Then just after supper I have the priveledge of judging Christmas lights with Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer. His Excellance and I had to take a couple laps around the city and give some houses and extra look before finalizing our top three picks. While I won't give away any results here, 6th Avenue South East was easily the best decorated street in town.

I didn't write that last paragraph as a shameless excuse to name drop. When people ask me why I'm still doing radio in small market Swift Current, that's why. The friendships I've made and unique things that happen in my day to day life couldn't happen anywhere else.

Team Canada beat Sweden 6-2 in Regina last night. The team looked well. People are still ticked about the green jerseys. I enjoy reading comments from people who say "every kid dreams of putting on a red and white jersey to represent Canada, not a green one."

Spoken like a true armchair coach.

I'm sure a player like Cody Eakin would glady wear a purple jersey with yellow dots if it meant playing for Team Canada. Let's chill out and realize it's a jersey that they'll maybe wear once more. We're not altering the national flag here.

Top Swift Current Newsmakers of 2009

Here is the list in one place...to make it easy for you to read.

10. Bryan Tallon/Barbara Walter...Swift Current Host Committee co-chairpersons for the 2010 Ford World Women's Curling Championships. While Tallon and Walter are not household names in our city, the event they're helping bring to town put them into the spotlight. The 2010 World Women's Curling Championships is a big event that will pump millions of dollars into the local economy, but the announcement of the event triggered hostility from the Swift Current Broncos...who will be forced out of the Credit Union i-Plex for round one of the WHL playoffs. Tensions have since evaporated. This blogger can only hope this event means the return of Canadian curler Jennifer Jones to Swift Current.

9. Ryan Plewis Swift Current went to the polls in late October to vote in an election of change. Plewis, the young lawyer, collected the second most votes of any candidate running for city council in Swift Current. It was his first time on the ballot. First timers normally don't get elected...or they just squeak in finishing 5th or 6th.

8. Cody Eakin The Swift Current Broncos are a HUGE part of Southwest Saskatchewan, and will have a presence on this list. The Winnipeg born Swift Current Bronco forward currently is leading all the CHL in goals after signing a six figure deal with a Washington Capitals in the off season...something that doesn't happen often for an 18 year old. Eakin is about the try out for Team Canada's World Junior Hockey team. Should he make the squad, he would be the first Bronco since Ian White in 2003 to represent the Swift Current Broncos at the tournament.

7. Lionel Tootoosis General Manager of The Living Sky Casino. Like Bryan Tallon and Barbara Walter, Tootoosis may not be a household name, but he is the man in charge of a news making facility. The Living Sky Casino is about to end it's first year of operation in Swift Current. After years of debate, a plebiscite and construction of the 30+ million dollar entertainment facility, Lionel Tootoosis and his crew can boast large cash payouts, expensive vehicle giveaways, and a string of popular acts coming to Swift Current. Wayne Newton, Nazareth, Terri Clark, Emerson Drive and other acts that would not include Swift Current on their tours in the pre-casino days made stops 'Where Life Makes Sense. '

6. Sandy Larson. The now ex-mayor of Swift Current quietly ended her tenure after the 2009 election. Larson chose not to run in 2009. Under Sandy Larson's watch the city saw a new hospital, renovated the Credit Union i-Plex and witnessed the teepee of lights at the Living Sky Casino among dozens of other projects. In the six years Swift Current had Sandy Larson in the Mayor chair, Swift Current saw it's most significant growth since the 70's. Just before leaving the chain of office at City Hall, Larson endorsed current mayor Jerrod Schafer as "the only choice" in the 2009 Civic Election.

5. Mark Lamb. The job of head coach and general manager of the Swift Current Broncos is as high profile a position as one could get in Swift Current. After 6 seasons in Dallas as an assistant coach with the Stars, the Swift Current/Cadillac/Ponteix (all three places lay claim as his hometown) returned to Southwest Saskatchewan from Texas to run the Swift Current Broncos. With the season almost half finished, Lamb has made a splash with some significant trades and an "old school" coaching style. Lamb took over the head coach GM job from...

4. Dean Chynoweth. After five seasons behind the Swift Current Broncos bench, Dean Chynoweth went to "the show" accepting a job with the NHL's New York Islanders as an assistant coach. In his five seasons, Chynoweth was in charge when the Broncos missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, played their first game in a renovated Civic Centre (later to be christened The Credit Union i-Plex), had several "town hall" type forums in the Canadian room to be accountable for a struggling team and helped bring the ADT Canada/Russia challenge came to Canada's smallest CHL market. He helped his staff move on to bigger and better things in their careers, including Dave Hunchak securing his first WHL head coaching job. Many of his former players moved on to play pro. In the 07-08 season he celebrated a first round upset over the Regina Pats. He was loved...and at times vilified by the Bronco Internet fan base. With controversy surrounding the status of his contract for the 2009-10 season, he accepted a job with the NHL's New York Islanders...ironically, a week after local product Marc Habscheid took a job with the WHL's Chilliwack Bruins to take himself out of the running for the local position...but that's another story.

3. Jerrod Schafer. After gathering the most votes of any candidate running for City Council in 2006, Alderman Jerrod Schafer took a run at the Mayor chair in 2009. With Outgoing Mayor Sandy Larson endorsing Schafer in 09, Schafer cruised to victory with more than 60% of the popular vote. The 32 year old financial planner became the youngest mayor in Swift Current's history. Schafer was front and center representing the city during a time of crisis this year...more on that shortly...

2. The Saskatchewan Roughriders. While they are not a local team per se, no other team dominated coffee talk like the green and white did in 2009. Controversy surrounding the General Manager, an up and down season punctuated with a Grey Cup appearance in Calgary...green was the color of choice in Swift Current in 2009 despite the unconventional end of the season. Swift Current had two official Rider visits in 2009. Chris Szarka was a guest speaker at the Swift Current Indians Field of Dreams Dinner, and Jason Clermont spoke at the Special Olympics Power Breakfast. Many fans would say that Clermont and Szarka were both under utilized in the Rider offence in 2009. The Swift Current Curse?

1. Don Robinson/RATS!

Regardless of what your Chinese calendar says, 2009 was the Year of the Rat in Swift Current. Don Robinson positioned himself front and center of the controversy...holding City Hall accountable by organizing a town hall meeting. Robinson also lit up the phone lines inviting out of town media to Swift Current for pieces like the one above. He was front and center...in every paper, and the radio and on TV newscasts telling Canada of the problem and the City of Swift Current doing "precious little" to stop it. The City has since put aside several hundred thousand dollars to battle the rodents. Robinson would take the media momentum from the rat issue and run for mayor in October...finishing second place to Jerrod Schafer. While Robinson finished second to Schafer in October, he is tops here for South West Saskatchewan's biggest news maker in 2009.

In his five seasons, Chynoweth was in charge when the Broncos missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, played their first game in a renovated Civic Centre (later to be christened The Credit Union i-Plex), had several "town hall" type forums in the Canadian room to be accountable for a struggling team and helped bring the ADT Canada/Russia challenge came to Canada's smallest CHL market. He helped his staff move on to bigger and better things in their careers, including Dave Hunchak securing his first WHL head coaching job. Many of his former players moved on to play pro. In the 07-08 season he celebrated a first round upset over the Regina Pats. He was loved...and at times vilified by the Bronco Internet fan base. With controversy surrounding the status of his contract for the 2009-10 season, he accepted a job with the NHL's New York Islanders...ironically, a week after local product Marc Habscheid took a job with the WHL's Chilliwack Bruins to take himself out of the running for the local position...but that's another story.

3. Jerrod Schafer. After gathering the most votes of any candidate running for City Council in 2006, Alderman Jerrod Schafer took a run at the Mayor chair in 2009. With Outgoing Mayor Sandy Larson endorsing Schafer in 09, Schafer cruised to victory with more than 60% of the popular vote. The 32 year old financial planner became the youngest mayor in Swift Current's history. Schafer was front and center representing the city during a time of crisis this year...more on that shortly...

2. The Saskatchewan Roughriders. While they are not a local team per se, no other team dominated coffee talk like the green and white did in 2009. Controversy surrounding the General Manager, an up and down season punctuated with a Grey Cup appearance in Calgary...green was the color of choice in Swift Current in 2009 despite the unconventional end of the season. Swift Current had two official Rider visits in 2009. Chris Szarka was a guest speaker at the Swift Current Indians Field of Dreams Dinner, and Jason Clermont spoke at the Special Olympics Power Breakfast. Many fans would say that Clermont and Szarka were both under utilized in the Rider offence in 2009. The Swift Current Curse?

Garbage Day Tuesday Brain Dump

Today I will visit Waldeck school. I have been asked to chat with the Grade 1, 2 and 3 class about being a radio guy. I get the same couple questions from kids every time I do a class room tour. "Who is the most famous person you ever met?"

Howie Mandel...and the exchange was AWFUL. It was last minute, I didn't have my A-game that day...and Howie didn't make it any easier for me.

Yesterday I blogged about Melville Millionaires coach and governor Garnet Keller and his stiff penalty from the WMBL. He had his wrists slapped HARD by the league for using an ineligable player towards the end of the 2009 season. I made an educated guess as to who the player was, and within an hour I was asked to remove the player's name from the blog. I guess I was right.

I did so out of good faith. Anyone with a semi developed sense of logic who is capable of deciphering baseball stats can figure out who it was. Issues I won't get into prevent me from saying more. Anyone with a sports blog knows what I'm talking about.

I would love to be a part of the 2010 season and go on the road with the Swift Current Indians as a play by play voice/media guy in some way shape or form. Even if the radio station doesn't pick up the broadcasts for Indians baseball, I'd be open to webcasting. I hope I'm still welcome in some parks. This blog...It's only my opinion guys. Nothing personal. I love the league, I love WMBL baseball, I love all the people in Seaman stadium in Okotoks, all the way to Pirie Field in Melville. I only hope someone capable of managing this great league and it's issues is in the commish's chair for next season.

WESTERN MAJOR BASEBALL LEAGUE
NEWS RELEASE
Weyburn, SK – December 6, 2009

The Western Major Baseball League announced today that as a result of actions related to the use of an ineligible player, the league has issued the following suspensions:
Garnet Keller, 2009 Melville Millionaires Governor and Coach has received a life suspension as a Governor of any WMBL franchise as well as a three year suspension as a coach in the WMBL.
Mike Green, 2009 Assistant Coach of the Melville Millionaires, has received a one year suspension as a coach in the WMBL.
The WMBL has given the Melville Millionaires the opportunity to reorganize with the full support of the Board of Governors. It is hoped that this long standing and valuable franchise in the WMBL will be able to restructure for the 2010 season.
The WMBL had its most successful season in 2009 as attendance increased overall and the competitive balance in the league is at its highest point in league history. The entire Board of Governors of the WMBL are excited about the 2010 season which will open in under seven months.
Due to Melville’s use of an ineligible player, the Okotoks Dawgs are declared the 2009 League Champion.

It Sure is Monday

This blog has been de-railed like a train near Spy Hill! HIYO!

A busy weekend has kept me away from the lap top and crackberry. I haven't even tweeted or updated my facebook status in a couple days. Blasphemy! A short roadie to Regina for a Christmas Party and time with the kids severed me from technology.

I only bought a few Christmas presents while in Regina. Fear not local merchants, I will keep it real for our LOCAL economy.

I FINALLY found a good use for Twitter.

I snapped this photo from my 24th story room at the Delta Regina on Saurday morning at 9:30am. Why are people lined up in -25 degree weather first thing on a Saturday morning? What is this place? I posed those questions to my followers on Twitter. Thanks to Scott Nicholls from Jack FM Regina for promptly tweeting the info. People were lined up at Bushwakker's Brew Pub to get a taste of a new beverage called Blackberry Mead.

What is Blackberry Mead? Is it the New Bud Lite Lime?

16 shopping days 'til Christmas. 7 days 'til our next paycheque. 24 days til New Years. What are you doing for New Years Eve? As of right now, I'm a man without a plan for Dec. 31st.

There is a new business in Swift Current called Renaissance Body Contour. This Thursday, I'll be getting a Universal Body Wrap on the radio. It'll toxify me, shed inches and drop me a few dress sizes. Thanks to Lori and Janice for the invite.

Stuck in the Middle Wednesday

Greetings from the frozen tundra of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Winter has arrived. -9 with blowing snow as I type this...and not getting any warmer in the near future.

I'm a dollar short and a day late blogging about the Riders and their Grey Cup loss. The too many men blunder will live on forever in TSN Top 10 list immortality. Nothing more I could say. You could blame the head coach, the special teams coach, the extra guy on the field, the guy in the end zone who didn't count the players...You could point the finger at anyone...and no one. Given the temperature in Southwest Saskatchewan, I'm just looking forward to snow melting, longer days and the start of next football season. Opening day I'll still buy a new Rider jersey and over the next twenty weeks it will get punished by beer, July sweat, chili, green face paint and pregame action on the practice field.

I managed to configure my Facebook news feed to only show my friend's status updates. I am not notified every time a sheep wanders onto some one's Facebook farm. A little thing that makes each day better. I wish I could remember how I did it. The things one can accomplish after a cab ride home from the Akropol at midnight.

Do you use Facebook more or less than you did a year ago? Are you on Twitter? How often do you tweet? Business consultants and people who get paid to come up with ideas are unanimous in saying social networking sites are taking over EVERY ONE'S life. Companies are being encouraged to market accordingly. Don't be surprised if you find yourself being friend requested and "poked" by Ronald McDonald in 2010.

Have voice...will travel. The Novice Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Classic will be held in Prince Albert at the Carlton Comprehensive High School on April 10th, 2010. This event was in Swift Current in 2008. I MC'd it when it was in Swift. The plan now is to hit the road and do the show in Prince Albert. There are a few people from Swift Current training for this event. Our Sense Making City will be very well represented up north. Chameleon Productions is putting the event on. An April weekend in PA...what kind of fun things are there to do?

Back to the radio show...Have lots to get done around the radio station before I broadcast from Nutter's later this morning. It's Power Wednesday, you know. 20% off everything.

Rider Pride on the Radio!

Thursday morning (tomorrow) Saskatchewan's Golden West Radio Stations are doing an auction for three tickets to the Grey Cup Game. All Golden West Stations in the 306 will coordinate their efforts with proceeds going to the Make a Wish Foundation. The trifecta of tickets is at Section F, Row 52..which I'm told is around the 55 yard line.

Bids start at 6am and stop at 8:45am sharp.

Highest bid at 8:45 gets the 3 tickets. In the event of identical bids they'll be given away using a random draw of the highest bidders.

Winning bid at broadcast at 9am.

This will be broadcast on Magic 97 in Swift Current, as well as
800 CHAB, Country 100 and Mix 103 in Moose Jaw, CJ1280 and Sun 102.3 FM in Estevan, AM1190 and Magic 103.5 in Weyburn, CJYM 1330, CFYM 1210, and Mix 104.9 FM in Rosetown/Kindersley as well as The Mighty Eagle 94.1 in Swift Current. CKSW/CJSN will also be in on things too in Southwest Saskatchewan.

Tuesday Garbage Day

Back in the blogosphere. Some random thoughts.

-Be cautious when updating your Facebook Status or Twitter with 'workout updates'. If you're constantly telling your friends and followers how much time you spend in the gym or on the treadmill..anything short of looking like 1980's Arnold Schwarzenegger or 1990's Linda Hamilton will be a disappointment to people when they see you in person. If you're busting your backside in the gym, let your new look speak for itself. Save your status updates for 'Go Riders' and 'Twilight was awesome!'

-While driving to work this morning at around 5am it was -1 degree, frost on windshields, yet someone was driving around the Southside by himself with his stereo churning out thumping bass with the window down.

Wasn't even smoking a cigarette. No reason to have the window down other than to show off the woofers. The new Akon/David Guetta song.

-The other night, Indecent Proposal was on a Movie Channel. I think every couple should watch that movie together...and have the inevitable discussion that comes with it. I wonder how many relationships have ended because of that movie?

Yes...I still have a girlfriend...we didn't argue...enough said.

-This is some audio from the Tuesday contest on Magic 97. On Tuesday's we play 5 in 10. Have a listen to Sue the librarian from Ashley Park School...

Monday, November 23rd...in Pictures

Some randoms I snapped while enjoying a day off...

The Downtown Christmas Tree stands on the corner of Chaplin Street and Central Avenue North...waiting to be lit. The annual Christmas Tree Lighting is this Thursday. People in attendance often include the Mayor, various choirs, radio station staff serving hot chocolate (I'll be there) and of course...SANTA!!!

There is snow on Elmwood Golf Course, Swift Current's primary tobaggan run, but sadly not enough for any crazy carpeting or GT snow racing.

Swift Current's Newest Business is open on the corner of Robert Street East and 6th NE. A & R stands next door to The Movie Gallery. Now you can rent the latest Johnny Depp movie and get all the fixings for a delicious Adobong Baboy in one stop!!!

City Crews work on the Memorial Park Christmas light display. In the next month, if you find yourself turning into a Grinch, a walk though this display will swell your heart three sizes at least.

It Sure is Monday...

Sore throat...headache, sore arms and shoulders from cowbell ringing, stiff knees from making the trip in a Sunfire, possible frost bite on the ears. (why wear a toque when I could show off the playoff Mohawk?)

One of the best Sundays in my life.

A few years ago on this blog, I wrote that I was all in favor of wiping Taylor Field/Mosaic stadium off the face of the Earth to build the Saskadome. My reasoning was that that Taylor field went decades without a playoff game, was the host of the first Grey Cup won by a US based team, and was associated with losing in general.

Would days like yesterday be as fun in a comfy dome?

While I still would love to see a Rider game in Regina in a climate controlled dome without wool socks...I can say that I'd honestly miss Taylor Field if it got the bull dozer. What a day. What a team.

Ken Miller makes old people and old school values seem hip. I hope his Grandkids think he's cool.

I'm off today. Recovering from yesterday. Sitting at my apartment, just home from a visit to Fabutan, with an Urban Ground coffee infused with Carolan's and listening to the best of Meat Loaf. I'm back on the air tomorrow.

Anyone who wants it can now get the H1N1 shot. All the details are here. Saturday at the Wheatland Mall, it was a slow day with vaccinations. Myself and Mayor Jerrod Schafer were at the Mall for the grand opening of the Salvation Army Miracle Room. We were offered the chance to get our shot, but both declined the chance to "jump the cue". The Cypress Health District has LOTS of the vaccine.

Well....it's a beautiful day out there. Time for a Chinook Pathway stroll.

Only parent with a mohawk. Nice impression. Probably bought my kids some sympathy points.

My kids both had great report cards. Tonight we'll celebrate with Chinese food. Their call. The novelty of the happy meal is wearing off I guess.

I'm not sure if I've even had Wong's Kitchen in 2009. Unacceptable for a Swift Current resident.

I will be in Regina for the game on Sunday. Text me, facebook me, tweet me if you'll be there. Hoping to get there in time for some pre-game practise field action.

The last time the Riders hosted the Western Final, I was four months away from being born. Once in a lifetime stuff!

Olympic Torch Arrives January 10

Just two months from now, Swift Current will welcome the Olympic Torch on its journey to Vancouver.
A celebration is planned for Kinetic Exhibition Park the night of January 10th, which is the 73rd day of the 106-day relay.

Nicole Peno with City Recreation and Parks says it will be a great event, which will start at 4:00pm inside the Stockade Building with games and entertainment. The event will then move outdoors for more entertainment, and the lighting of the cauldron when the torch arrives.

Peno encourages everyone in southwest Saskatchewan to come out and celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic torch.

Blogger's Note: This is an awesome thing for Swift Current, and will be a part of our city's history! Having said that...is it just me or does the Olympic Torch for this event look like something that should be passed around a Volkswagon van?

I know, I know, this is awesome for Swift Current to get the torch and our country to host this world wide event. Every time I see that torch, I have to wonder if it is someone's "Vangroovy" inside joke though?
